Thornton Community Centre, is a wonderful facility situated in the heart of the village, with breathtaking views over the nearby reservoir. Thornton is a relatively small, linear village steeped in history and heritage, once known for coal mining in the area, but now better known for it’s position in the National Forest, surrounded by Country parks and footpaths galore. The village boasts two pubs, the Reservoir and the Bricklayers Arms, a Community centre, a club where live bands play most weekends, a corner shop, a garage and a garden centre.
The community centre itself has two large halls and a small meeting room. The main hall is ideal for all manner of events from private parties to concerts and is home to the Markfield and Thornton theatre group; the stage making it an ideal venue for local amateur dramatic productions. There is plenty of space throughout the two halls for craft fairs, art exhibitions plus much more. Outside the hall there is a large grassed area leading to the children’s playground and the footpath to the reservoir. In May 2017 a brand new kitchen was fitted to the hall; the Trustees of the centre are committed to keeping the hall in the best possible state of repair. There is off street parking for several cars.
Next to the main hall there is a self contained Sports hall and in June 2017 the village started up a sports club – there are 4 table tennis tables and equipment plus a badminton court and equipment available.
The annual Thornton Carnival is held on the 1st Saturday of July, a day for all the family to enjoy. Many groups like the Play school, the Brownies, and Yoga class use the hall throughout the weekdays.
The hall hire costs are extremely reasonable and bookings can be made by contacting Muriel Walker on 01455 822148 or email email@example.com
